Sirocco’s, Tullamore, Co Offaly – Top class Italian Restaurant

Sirocco’s is an Italian restaurant located on Patrick St, Tullamore, Co Offaly.  The restaurant has recently won Best Restaurant Offaly 2011 and Best Customer Service Offaly 2011 in the Restaurant Awards of Ireland – accolades it also won in 2010.  I remember it from years ago in its former guise of Senor Rico’s and was looking forward to dining there again last weekend.

The restaurant is small but inviting.  It was busy when we arrived and we had to wait a few minutes for our table but there was a little bar area where we could sit and browse the menu and order drinks.  Having ordered the wine, a carafe of the house Sauvignon Blanc for me and a half bottle of Shiraz for my friend (both priced around the e13 to e14 mark), we settled back to review the menu before being led to our table.

The menu is extensive with about 15 each of starters, pasta dishes, pizzas and meat/fish dishes. For starters, my friend chose the Calamari Fritti (Deep fried squid rings with lemon & tartare dip) and I the Gamberi Alla Limone (Tiger prawns sauteed with lemon & garlic).  For a main course, my friend chose Penne All’Amatriciana (smoked bacon with a mild chilli, garlic and tomato sauce).  This was not strictly on the menu with the Amatriciana teamed with Spaghetti, however, there was no issue whatsoever in making the change.  I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a good pizza and settled on the “Gucci” pizza with toppings of Ham, Salami, Pepperoni and Peppers.  We were brought a basket of fresh bread whilst we waited for our starters.

Both of us really enjoyed our starters – and we tasted each others and both starters were very good.  My friend pronounced her pasta dish to be excellent and I was very happy with my pizza, one of the best I have ever tasted.  Once again, dessert  became the casualty as neither of us were able to think of having one.  To compensate, we ordered both a Calypso and a Bailey’s coffee and both of these were very good.

Service at Sirocco’s was excellent even though the restaurant was very busy and we really enjoyed our saturday evening.  The bill came to c. e80 for a carafe and a half bottle of wine, two starters, two main courses and two liqueur coffees which was very good value.  Well done to Paula and her team, it is clear to see that Sirocco’s deserves the praise it is getting and the awards it is winning.  Can’t wait to go back!
